1 SHENANDOAH VALLEY / BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS

We leave today and make our way through the Shenandoah Valley and into the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia where we stay in Wytheville.

2 NASHVILLE / MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE

We head west through Bristol, Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee. We take a short break in Nashville to explore Second Avenue before making our way to Memphis, Tennessee for the night.

3 MISSISSIPPI RIVER / ARKANSAS CAPITOL IN LITTLE ROCK / OKLAHOMA

This morning we cross the Mississippi River and head across the State of Arkansas. We visit Arkansas’ Impressive Capitol in Little Rock where President Clinton spent many months before moving to Washington. We continue into Oklahoma and spend the night in Oklahoma City.

4 DOWNTOWN OKLAHOMA CITY / TEXAS / SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO

This morning before leaving Oklahoma City we make a Picture Stop at their State Capitol and visit the site for The Oklahoma City National Memorial. We go through the Panhandle of Texas and into Santa Fe, New Mexico. Santa Fe calls itself the “City Different”, and here converge the opposing streaks of the Enduring Weave of New Mexico – Indian, Spanish and Anglo Cultures. We spend the next two nights in this Charming City of Santa Fe.

5 DOWNTOWN SANTA FE / THE PLAZA

This morning we explore Downtown Santa Fe including The Plaza, State Capitol, Palace of the Governors, Mission of San Miguel of Santa Fe and Our Lady of Light Chapel. Many artists live and work in Santa Fe and we have ample time to browse through some of the Galleries, Studios and Interesting Shops. We spend another night in Santa Fe.

6 TAOS, NEW MEXICO / COLORADO

Today we leave Santa Fe and head to another New Mexico Town which is now the Center of Art and Tourism – Taos. After getting a look at this Fascinating town we continue on to Pueblo, Colorado. We spend the night in Canon City, Colorado.

7 ROYAL GORGE / ROCKY MOUNTAINS / BLACK CANYON OF GUNNISON

We spend some time at Spectacular Royal Gorge, which was carved by the Arkansas River. We head into the Rocky Mountains and across Monarch Pass. Just before we reach our destination for the night – Montrose, Colorado – we visit Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Here the River has cut into some of the Earth’s Oldest Base Rocks to a maximum depth of 2,700 feet.

8 MILLION DOLLAR HIGHWAY / DURANGO:

Today we travel to Durango, Colorado. We go through the old silver mining town of Ouray. We take the Million Dollar Highway from Ouray to Silverton. A six mile section of the road ranks among the Nation’s Most Spectacular Highways. Silverton – the statement that supposedly gave this Mining Camp its name – “We’ve got Silver by the Ton”! – was true. After exploring this Wild West Town we take an alternate mode of transportation as we board the “Durango & Silverton Narrow Gage Railroad”, a narrow gauge, coal burning passenger train for a scenic ride into Durango. We spend the night in Durango, Colorado.

9 MESA VERDE / FOUR CORNERS / MONUMENT VALLEY

This morning we visit Mesa Verde National Park where we see the remains of the Cliff Dwellings. The earliest known inhabitants were the modified basket makers in AD 500-750. After we leave Mesa Verde we visit the Four Corner’s Monument which is the only place in the country where Four States Meet. This afternoon we visit breath taking Monument Valley, where red sandstone monoliths tower as much as 1,000 feet above the Valley Floor. You will immediately recognize this area as many Movies and TV Commercials have been filmed here. We spend the night in Page, Arizona.

10 GLEN CANYON DAM / LAKE POWELL / NORTH RIM OF THE GRAND CANYON:

This morning we visit Glen Canyon Dam and Beautiful Lake Powell. On our way to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon we cross the Colorado River at Navajo Bridge. This river is responsible for Creating the Magnificent Grand Canyon. After viewing what we consider to be The Greatest Natural Attraction in North America – The Grand Canyon, we enter Utah to spend the night in Kanab.

11 ZION CANYON NATIONAL PARK / BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK

Today we visit a place that rivals the Grand Canyon for Scenic Beauty – Zion National Park in Utah. The Mormons called this spectacular outdoor wonder the “Heavenly City of God” because its massive formations of extremely vertical rock looked like huge cathedrals and thrones. This afternoon we visit Bryce Canyon National Park. An Indian name for the area translates as “Red Rocks Standing Like Men in a Bow Shaped Canyon”. We spend the night near Bryce Canyon National Park.

12 ARCHES NATIONAL PARK / MOAB

After seven days of traveling the scenic back roads we finally see an Interstate Highway as we make our way to Moab, Utah. Here we visit Arches National Park containing the largest number of stone arches in the country. Along with the more than 900 arches are many canyons, spires, fins, and balancing rocks. We spend the night in Moab, Utah.

13 ROCKY MOUNTAINS / DENVER

Today we leave the scenic state of Utah and head across the Rocky Mountains into Colorado going by Grand Junction and Vail. We arrive in Denver this afternoon so that we may take a good look at its Gold Domed Capitol building. We spend the night in Denver, Colorado.

14 PLAINS OF KANSAS / TOPEKA

We leave Denver going east across Colorado and into the “Sunflower State” of Kansas. We cross the plains with mile after mile of wheat fields and towering grain silos along the way. This afternoon we visit the beautiful Cathedral of the Plains. This ornate structure was begun in 1908 and rises 141 feet above the plains with stained glass windows imported from Munich, Germany. We spend the night in Topeka – the State Capital.

15 KANSAS CITY / GATEWAY ARCH

This morning as we leave Kansas, we make our way to St. Louis to visit the famous “Gateway to the West” the St. Louis Arch. Then we continue across the Mississippi River and spend the night in Indiana.

16 INDIANA / KENTUCKY / TENNESSEE

Today we head for home with all of our memories of the Grandeur of Canyonlands which must be seen to be believed! We go through Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. We go through Indiana; Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky and Knoxville, Tennessee. We spend the night in Wytheville.

17 HOMEWARD BOUND

Our journey today takes us home going through the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia with many great memories of our Canyonland experience. After all we’ve seen we will certainly agree that this has been “The Most Scenic Tour” ever taken.
